Windows 7 Backup to External Drives
The hard disk that we used for this article is not particularly important: first, the performance of hard disks connected via USB 2.0 are all relatively similar and secondly, the ability of all identically to the internal 3.5 and 2.5-inch hard drives. It is recommended to opt for a recognized brand and a solid product to put the odds on his side. We chose the Portable Rugged 2.5-inch Hitachi after testing a series of portable hard drives for off-road use.
The Rugged Portable Hitachi is a portable hard drive with USB cable integrated reinforced, available in versions 250, 320 and 500 GB; larger capacity models will probably be available when Hitachi will launch its first 2.5-inch disks of 640GB. All Rugged Portable models are designed to withstand drops and liquid and are supplied with a backup software called Hitachi Local Backup, we have not tested, this article focusing on more specialized solutions on the Windows 7 backup utility, which has the advantage of being free. All Rugged Portable also come with 2GB of free online space (expandable fee) and come with a 3 year warranty.
#1 Windows 7 Backup
The backup utility included with Microsoft Windows 7 is based on the Backup and Restore Center in Windows Vista, which it brings many improvements. It not only back up files individually, but also to create an image of the system partition and restore boot the Windows installation disc.
By default, Windows backup files the files in the user folder on the desktop and in the default Windows folder and creates an image. It also manages the schedule and the backup schedule.
It is possible to customize the files and locations to save by selecting the option provided for this purpose.
Before starting the backup, the Windows utility lists the files that are copied.
It then asks the user to check the schedule and the backup schedule. If you have the original installation disc of Windows 7, you do not need to repair disk.
The Backup window displays all necessary information in a Windows Explorer-like window. This also select an existing set of backup and use it to restore.

The space management function is useful if you run out of space: it will delete the oldest backups and to indicate to the Windows backup set retention period.
